Should A Web Designer Consider SEO?

According to an online poll, 1 out of every 10 web designers says it’s not necessary. However during the design stage, crucial decisions are made that can affect the ability to SEO later. The locations of your calls to action also need to be considered at this point, as the prime locations will be taken. Implementing these later and can make the overall design a bit crowded.

Some common design mistakes without SEO in mind:

* Burying important keywords in an image that spiders cannot read.
* Having only a flash navigation that spiders cannot crawl or follow.
* Having large deisn elements at the top of a site, which pushes important content down.

The main design of a website is focused on human visitors, as it should be.  We respond to many different design elements such as audio, text, video, etc..  However, the SEO spiders respond better to text. We as designers should keep this in mind as we create new exciting websites.

Blind Social Media Sharing

230 million tweets are sent each day on Twitter. On Facebook, more than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) are shared each month.

With the massive amount of information out there about any given topic, your business needs a unique way to stand out from the crowd. It’s not about how many posts per day, week, or month, but instead it is about the relevancy and credibility of your posts.

A few things to help your credibility…

Use blind links in moderation. Blind links are social media posts that contain only the article title and the URL. While this seems like a harmless way to share information, blind link overload can lead to devalued credibility and decreased social influence for your business. Most tweets with shared links should include the opinion of the person tweeting it. Commentary shares the user’s opinion and personal insight on the subject. Thoughtful opinions indicate to other users that the content is worthy of further consumption.

Read before you re-tweet. This may sound silly, but studies have shown that the rate of sharing content is higher than the rate of consuming that same content. Even if you trust the source of the content and the title is appealing, do yourself a favor and read the content before re-tweeting it because you wouldn’t want the link to turn out to be spam or the incorrect link. Also, by reading the article before you repost it, you can make sure that everything in the article is relevant and appropriate to directly associate with your business.

Making Your Social Media More “Human”

If your company wants to use social networking platforms like Twitter, Facebook, or Google + effectively, you need to “humanize” the face of your social media marketing campaign. Adopt a persona – a selection of thoughts, emotions, observations, and personality traits that are to be perceived by others. Be genuine and friendly, like a human being, instead of a corporate robot.

When engaging in social media, you should be social and somewhat informal, but in a way that’s appropriate, relevant, and interesting to your target audience. The definition of “appropriate” depends heavily on your business culture and the industry you are in. Just like clothing that is deemed appropriate for the club may not be appropriate for church, social media posts appropriate for AXE (by Unilever) may not be appropriate for Gerber®.
It is always a good idea to keep an ear out for customer concerns and complaints so you can respond to them appropriately. When interacting with unsatisfied customers, it is helpful to be humble and focus on their objections, problems, and/or questions. You can use content to educate them about how to make an intelligent purchase.

Even a 140-character tweet can have content value. If what you say to your audience adds value to their lives, they will enjoy hearing from you every time. Your posts should be entertaining, useful, and relevant to your consumers.
Remember, sparking engaging conversations on social media platforms is the seasoning that makes your content more appetizing. Social media can be a great tool to help brand your company, engage your audience, and provide a “human” side to your business.
